Mobile, Alabama: The Birthplace of Mardi Gras
If you're not a 'Fat Tuesday' aficionado, you may not know that Mobile is the true birthplace of America's original Mardia Gras festivities. Celebrating since 1703, Mobile is home to the impressive parades, vibrant floats, flying moon pies, and collectible doubloons that have long become signature to Mardi Gras festivities. From February 11th through March 1st, the downtown locale will be hosting over 40 parades and family-friendly revelries. You'll even see houses adorned with Mardi Gras galore as you make your way through the streets of Mobile.
Start your getaway with a visit to the Mobile Carnival Museum, highlighting the history of Mardi Gras with fourteen galleries, video presentations, and an interactive float space housed in a historic mansion. Explore the area between bouts of festivities and grab a bite to fuel your days. Catch a hearty brunch at the Ruby Slipper, enjoy a handcrafted cocktail at The Noble Southand stop by Spot of Tea, situated in a historic building dating back to the 1830s. The Mobile Botanical Gardens provide a serene stroll, housing roughly 100 acres of plants and aromatic flowers. If you're traveling with kids, check out the Medal of Honor Park for plenty of outdoor activities, from a playground to baseball, softball, football, soccer, and tennis spaces.
If you're looking to add some rest and relaxation to your itinerary, there are plenty of nearby RV parks and resorts that offer the perfect retreat from the downtown parties. Relax in rural settings and kick back with a lakeside view. You can bring along your swim gear, canoe, kayaks or fishing equipment for the days you wish to unwind with the family. There are also plenty of brilliant spots for bird watching, so don't forget your binoculars!
Where to Camp
Things to Do in the Comfort of Your RV Campground
Whether you're road-tripping to the south or want to enjoy Mardi Gras from afar, you can easily get in the spirit from the comfort of your home on wheels. If you're more for having a good time while avoiding the crowds, you can create a party of your own anywhere your heart desires. After all, that's the beauty of the RV life!
Mardi Gras Fun and Games
Have the young ones join in on the fun by getting their help to adorn the RV with hanging beads and festive ribbons of purple, green, and gold. You can print or purchase plain masks for the little ones to color and decorate with feathers. With some glue, loose beads and a couple of empty canvases or frames, the kids can also create a colorful, artsy mosaic. Get some fresh air by taking the kids out on a gold coin scavenger hunt around the campground. If you get your hands on a unique selection of beads, give one strand to each friend and family member and create a forbidden word such as "beads" or "mask". If you catch someone saying the forbidden word, you can take their beads. Whoever holds the most beads at the end of the evening is the winner (you can even include a prize like a crown and glow necklaces for the kids or a beverage for adults)!
