When you get a good night's sleep, you just feel better. There are many health benefits to getting quality sleep including a stronger immune system, improved memory, and less stress. Ideally, everyone should strive to get 7-8 hours of ZZZs to be at their best each day.
We all want to wake up refreshed and ready for the day no matter what, but especially when we're RVing. Even though traveling in your RV can bring unique challenges for sleeping well, there are a number of things you can do to make nighttime more restful. Below we've outlined our top eight tips for getting a great night's sleep in your RV.

Tip #1: Invest in a good RV mattress
Having a comfortable mattress is a key component of getting quality sleep. Unfortunately, not all RVs come with a top of the line mattress, so many people end up purchasing an upgraded one. This is an expense that you will definitely get a great return on. Another more budget-friendly option is to add a 2-3" mattress topper instead. Or you can do both, if needed, and make it feel exactly as you want it.
Tip #2: Don't overlook RV bedding
One thing that really helps me sleep well is a good quality sheet set. We have found that trying to use bedding from our house did not work well because it wasn't sized for the RV mattress and kept shifting. Sheets that are specifically made for an RV mattress will stay in place much better. We also keep several different blankets on hand to accommodate changing seasons and temperatures, and differences between each other's needs.
Tip #3: Don't forget about air flow in your RV
Speaking of temperatures, most people sleep better when the temperatures are a little cooler. You can lower the thermostat about five degrees in the sleeping area, somewhere in the 65-68-degree range, to make it more conducive to falling asleep. Opening a side window and/or using a ceiling fan or floor fan is another option for providing some air flow without freezing you out. You'll have to experiment to find the best temperature for you. A great side benefit of a fan is that it also helps to mask noise from outside.
Tip #4: Limit lighting and noise at RV campgrounds
You can't really control the lights outside your RV at night, but you can use shades or blackout curtains to keep the inside dark. When arriving at your campground, asking for a site that is away from the main roads and common use areas will limit your exposure to lights and noise during the night. Some people find a sleep mask or noise cancelling earplugs helpful if you find yourself tossing and turning.
Tip #5: Properly level your RV
Making sure your RV is level will help with any rocking motion when you turn over at night or get up to use the restroom. To do this, ensure your stabilizing jacks are extended and the RV is stable when you set up camp. The extra time to get everything level will be appreciated when you are not waking up at night anytime someone moves. Tip #6: Stay Active while RVing
Traveling in your RV is an excellent way to experience the great outdoors. There are so many options for staying active while you are out in nature. We love to hike, ride bicycles, or kayak, but even a walk around the campground can be good exercise. By keeping active each day your body will be more receptive to sleep when nighttime comes.
Tip #7: Establish a RV bedtime routine
Our bodies function better when we keep a consistent sleep schedule. However, the things we do before sleep can also impact how easily we fall asleep. I find it easier to stop eating and drinking a few hours before bedtime. It's also helpful to limit your screen time (computers, cell phones, laptops, iPads, etc.) before bed so that your mind can begin relaxing. If you need help winding down, reading a book is a great way to unwind. But beware--sometimes if the book is too exciting, you might stay up too late just to finish it!
Tip #8: Enjoy Your Best Sleep while RVing
You look forward to your RV travels and the great memories you will make. Don't let sleep difficulties get in the way of your best vacation experience. By implementing some or all of these tips, you can enjoy better sleep and better health. Let the adventures begin...and sweet dreams!
